An Innovative Partnership to Support Students

Banking on community.

We're passionate about giving back to the communities we serve, and our knack for relationship building also helps develop unique partnerships with local organizations.

One recent example: In a partnership that is truly innovative among financial institutions, Washington Trust Bank teamed up with Canopy Credit Union to provide financial education opportunities for students at Lumen High School. Lumen, a public charter school located in downtown Spokane, has been serving teen parents and their children in the city since opening in 2020. In addition to quality educational programs, the school includes a specialized early learning center for children and a variety of support services designed to meet the needs of young parents.

What do the funds support?
To help support these students, Washington Trust has granted Canopy and Lumen $15,000, which will fund a savings match for juniors and seniors ($10,000) and establish an emergency personal loan fund ($5,000) to be administered by Canopy on behalf of the school's student support services.

"Since our founding, Washington Trust has been committed to creating meaningful impact in our communities through unique opportunities and partnerships like this one," said Jack Heath, CEO, who, along with members of our community relations team and representatives from Canopy Credit Union, visited Lumen High School to present the donation.

This collaboration will help provide financial education and real opportunity for the students at Lumen High School to plan for their future.

As the end of the school year approaches, Lumen juniors and seniors will learn from financial education workshops taught by Canopy team members and set up savings accounts that will be eligible for matching funds provided by Washington Trust.
